Students in Mr. Kleinbard's Community Activism elective are working to create positive changes in the Canarsie community.
The purpose of the Community Activism elective is to empower our
students to become active members of their communities, and to take on
the challenges that face their generation with an eye toward making
systematic change.
For their first project of the year, the students
chose to work as mentors to younger children. While good parents and
teachers are vital to every child's success, our students realized that
having another young adult as a positive role model can make all the
difference as well. With that in mind, they recently began a Big
Brother/Big Sister mentoring program with nearby PS 115 on 92nd Street
in Canarsie.
Every Tuesday and Thursday the students travel over to PS
115 to play sports, discuss current events, help with homework, or just
hang out with a group of 10-15 5th graders. It is our hope that this
program will inspire both the students at PS 115 and Urban Action
Academy to become more active young citizens.
If you'd like to help out the program in any way, please contact Mr. Kleinbard.
